| Pauline Murray - Interview | |
What are penetration up to at the moment? We are currently recording new songs and rehearsing the live set with new guitarist Billy Gilbert. We have licensed the live dvd (Re-Animated) to Cherry Red who will be repackaging it and re releasing it in November (So buy the original one through the web site now as there are only a limited amount left.) We have also had news that Captain Oi (punk independent label) have licensed Moving Targets from Virgin and are repackaging it with extra tracks, lyrics and new sleeve notes. How is the new line up working? We have been very lucky to find Billy to replace Paul. He has worked hard and learned all the old songs and is contributing to the new ones. It’s working out really well. Any tour plans in the next year? We are hoping to do more gigs at the end of this year in November. We are currently trying to get these organised. We have been offered some USA west coast gigs in the spring which we are considering. Obviously we want to do more gigs but we can usually only do them in short bursts. It would be ideal for us to do some festivals next summer both here and abroad. What other bands rock your world at the minute? No particular bands at the moment though I recently went to see James Brown and that was fantastic. Who are your heroes? Don’t really have any. What's your favourite way to relax? I like to read. I’m also a fan of alternative health therapies i.e. reflexology and I recently tried High octave healing which was an interesting experience (no, I’m not turning into a hippy!).These are great ways to relax. I also enjoy singing! What's your favourite bevy and how often do you indulge? I mainly drink water, black tea, or fruit juice. I’m an absolute failure with alcohol. I don’t drink beer or fizzy drinks. If I was going for it I would have Vodka with mixer and it would take at least six to get there. Last time I was really bad was after a Buzzcocks show in Newcastle. Any thoughts on Manor Quay show on Dec 3rd? We are looking forward to the Manor Quay Show. We are trying to arrange some other gigs before it so that it’s not Billy’s first show with the band. We will definitely have some new songs in the set so it should be good. Do you have a message for the world? No |

Named after the Stooges song of the same name the band were formed in late 76 in Ferryhill County Durham by three friends Pauline Murray, Robert Blamire and Gary Smallman after seeing the Sex Pistols play in Manchester. They played their first gig in October 76 at the Middlesborough Rock Garden and played their first London gig at the famous Roxy Club in January 77 supporting Gen X. This first gig in the bright lights of London was less than fondly recalled by Pauline "We spent a fortune getting down there. We thought it was great. Then when we got there it was such a dump. I don't know what we were expecting but it wasn't quite that ." While singles were coming out a plenty by other acts Penetration, like X Ray Spex and The Rezillos (Siouxsie would have to wait a further year !) had to wait till later in the year to get a recording contract (strangely all women lead bands ! ?). The excellent 'Don't Dictate' was released late '77 then 'Firing Squad', early '78, before original member Gary Chaplin jumped ship. Neal Floyd joined and then a second guitarist Fred Purser was added who was more metallic minded with guitar noodling (later joining The Tygers Of Pan Tang). The debut 'Moving Targets' was released in late '78. Heavy touring in 1979 and another album 'Coming Up For Air', but no real commercial success found Penetration in internal disharmony. The album appeared after the band had decided to split. The end came at a Newcastle City Hall which was recorded and issued on the posthumous bootleg 'Race Against Time'. Amazingly Penetration have reformed and are playing gigs. "I never wanted to be in Penetration and to be worrying all the time. I wanted it to be fun, not to be always thinking of hit singles and cracking America and writing for the next LP." Pauline Murray NME October 1979
